(OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA) — Today, Black Action Alliance had the opportunity to join the team at KIQI 1010AM Oakland for a powerful conversation about public safety in Oakland, CA....where we are struggling with a deep and urgent public safety crisis following the abrupt departure of Chief Mitchell.
What’s unfolding is not just a leadership vacuum. It’s a reflection of long-standing dysfunction within the Oakland Police Department, compounded by the continued oversight of Federal Monitor Robert Warshaw. Appointed to ensure OPD’s compliance with constitutional policing, Warshaw—a New York-based attorney—has collected over $20 million in fees across 25 years, with no clear end in sight.
His role, once meant to protect the community, now resembles a pseudo-receivership that lacks transparency, accountability, and urgency.
This is not just about one man. It’s about a system that has failed to evolve. It’s about Oakland's Civic Leaders needing to confront the reality of our public safety crisis not with platitudes or delay, but with decisive, community-centered action.
Reform is not optional. It’s overdue.
BAA remains committed to advocating for a future where safety, justice, and local control are not in conflict, but in alignment.

About the Black Action Alliance
BAA was formed to give a voice to the Black community in the Bay Area, whose views have historically been underrepresented in policy implementation. While many past leaders have claimed to represent our community, their actions have not aligned with our community’s needs. BAA supports common sense ideas that improve public safety, homelessness, the small business ecosystem, affordable housing, and quality public education, among other issues central to the Black Community.
