Tonight, we celebrate a breakthrough.
With the passage of Proposition 50, California has taken a bold step toward a more inclusive democracy. Governor Gavin Newsom’s leadership in recognizing redistricting as a tool for justice helped pave the way for this historic moment. His vision made it possible to rebalance power mid-census, responding to the growing call from communities who have felt sidelined in critical policy decisions.
At Black Action Alliance (BAA), we were proud to join forces with BWOPA and the NAACP to build grassroots momentum for Yes on Prop 50 across Oakland, Alameda County, and the wider Bay Area. This campaign was never just about policy. It was about people.
We knocked doors, hosted town halls, and held real conversations with neighbors, friends, and families. We broke down the “how” and the “why” of Prop 50, making sure voters had the tools and clarity they needed to act. And they did.
This win is a ripple that builds into a wave, reaching across the ocean of possibility for Black Californians and beyond. It reminds us that when we move together with purpose, we can shift the tides of power and possibility.
Congratulations to every campaign partner, volunteer, and voter who helped make this happen. We did it, and we did it together.
Now we look ahead. It is time to reflect, refine, and keep building. Let’s continue advocating for policies that center compassion, invest in Black communities and other historically marginalized groups, and deliver on the promise of quality healthcare, strong infrastructure, and excellent education for our children.
In celebration and solidarity,
Black Action Alliance
