The Oakland Police Department Pursuit Policy Change | Is There Light at the End of the Tunnel?

ree

The Oakland Police Department’s recent change to its pursuit policy is a welcome and necessary step toward restoring public safety. Giving officers a common-sense tool to respond to criminal activity is essential.

However, the continued exclusion of property crimes from pursuit eligibility defies logic. Limiting chases to violent offenses ignores the real and escalating impact of organized theft, vehicle break-ins, and other property-related crimes that destabilize our neighborhoods.

Support from the California Highway Patrol in Oakland is contingent on the full removal of the “no chase” policy. Criminals are exploiting this loophole, sowing chaos across the city with little fear of consequence.
